| The 7
stanes is rapidly becoming the main
network of off road cycling routes in Great Britain.
Castle Douglas is central to 5 of the 7 routes. Why
are they called the 7 stanes ? ......... Because
each route has a small section of bare rock to traverse.
It is always on the 'experienced' cyclers route (marked
as black) but can be avoided by the many other gentler
routes. click on the image to see more.........Mountain

| Kirkpatrick
Macmillan, an inventor, was born in
Keir (Dumfries and Galloway) in 1812. He was a blacksmith
at Courthill Smithy, Keir Mill, Dumfriesshire. Kirkpatrick
MacMillan developed the first rear-wheel driven safety
bicycle in 1842, which allowed the rider to power
the bicycle by means of pedals attached to levers
and then attached to the rear wheel. This proved
a success as the Hobby Horse, which was popular at
the time, only provided momentum through the swinging
of the riders feet back and forth. He, however, never
patented his idea and it was therefore widely copied.

| Dumfries
and Galloway region is an ideal location for enjoying
a cycling holiday. The terrain is not as steep as the
Scottish Highlands and therefore more suited to cycling,
indeed along much of the 200 miles of coast, the many
peaceful roads are relatively flat. The overall terrain
can be described as being mainly rolling countryside
with flat areas near the coast and steeper areas in the
hills and glens on the higher ground - indeed Scotland

geared up to cycling then why not try Galloway
