This is a well laid out 9 hole course on the outskirts of the town. The greens and tees are well cared for and are a pleasure to play on. This parkland layout has some very interesting holes, particularly the third, with its plateau green - very difficult to catch in regulation. A good test of golf for all types of golfer.

Newton Stewart

Newton Stewart Golf Club

Kirroughtree Avenue, Minnigaff, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, DG8 6PF
Tel: 01671 402172   Fax: 01671 402172

The 18 hole golf course at Newton Stewart is set in mature parkland, close to the town, but on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park, with spectacular views towards lofty Cairnsmore and across Wigtown Bay. The challenge provided is sufficient for the Club to host county Championships from time to time, but is still enjoyable for visitors of all standards who are warmly welcomed on the course and in the clubhouse.

The lay-out opens with a pair of par fours around 350 yards long with 'out of bounds' on the right, so accuracy rather than length from the tee is required to score well. A short climb to the 3rd tee brings you to the first of five par threes, which are a special feature of the course. This one is called 'Houlit's Nest' and the others, 'Doocot, Gushet, Soup Plate and Punchbowl', each provide their own particular demands.

Around the turn, the 8th, 9th and 10th are set around a picturesque lochan, whose adjacent burn comes into play. Find mature trees and patches of whins are more than just a scenic backdrop and may easily feature strongly on the closing holes. Holes 12 to 16 each have their own particularly fearsome spots, before the final holes remind you that it really is a pleasant place after all: provided you keep out of the playing field next door! Which is not included in the boundaries of the course.

Afterwards you can enjoy some excellent catering in the fully licensed clubhouse.

If you love golf - you'll love it here!

The best links golf in the west of Scotland is largely contained along the Ayrshire coast between Turnberry and the surrounds of Troon and Prestwick. but there are pockets where fine examples of the best traditional golf can be found. One of the finest examples is Southerness, truly one of Scotland's hidden golf assets, with its spectacular views across the coast of Galloway and to the mountains of the Lake District. Mackenzie Ross, who rebuilt Turnberry after it was dug up to make way for an airfield during World War 11, was the man responsible for creating the beautiful Southerness layout fifteen miles from the County town of Dumfries on the shores of the Solway Firth.

Situated in the picturesque River Dee valley and offering some superb views, Park of Tongland Family Golf Centre is ideal for the beginner just starting out or wishing to take up golf for the first time and who wants to experience golf in its entirety, the high handicapper looking to improve or develop their game or the low handicapper wanting to improve their short game. A family run business, a warm welcome is assured for the golfer and non-golfer alike, whether the choice is to relax in the cafeteria and enjoy a meal, snack or light refreshment or to make use of the facilities without the hustle and bustle normally associated with golf courses.

Facilities for the golfer include:

A nine bay floodlit, fully fitted, covered, sculptured practice range extending to some 350 yards, a 'short game' practice area with a large practice bunker adjacent to the short game area.

Soon to be completed purpose built practice green.

A nine hole par three golf course, the layout of which allows eighteen holes to be played utilising separate tees for the front nine and back nine on each hole. The longest hole is some 160 yards and the shortest hole 76 yards with the remainder falling between. The layout and nature of the course means it is not as easy to play as first looks would suggest. A number of 'hazards' including natural shrubbery and a stream which borders one of the holes, additional interest to the course and require to be avoided but catch out the careless or unwary. Plans are in place to add additional tees extending the length of all the holes, while retaining the existing tees, to cater for the more experienced golfer or those simply wanting to experience more of a challenge.
