Winter in Dumfries and Galloway

Enjoy a winter escape

Crisp mornings when you can see your breath as you take a brisk walk to work up the appetite for a hearty lunch, dream away the afternoon with a good book, followed by an intimate dinner.

In Dumfries & Galloway we'll banish those winter blues and help you make the most of this enchanting time of year. The scenery is particularly special as the winter sun highlights the frosty hills and glens.

And there's so much to see and do; wrap up warm and take a trip to Caerlaverock Wetlands Centre where thousands of feathered visitors including pink footed geese visit for the winter. It's the best time to see the red kites on the Galloway Kite Trail as they are easier to spot in the trees, pop along to the feeding platform at Bellymack Hill Farm for a close up view of these mighty birds.

Birding is particularly good in the winter months. The geese at Caerlaverock, the red kites at Ken Dee marshes, the winter waders all along the coast and The feeding station is only 10 minutes drive from the Old Exchange and the Ken-Dee Marshes Reserve and around 30 minutes drive from RSPB Scotland’s Mersehead Reserve, and so can be easily integrated within a good day’s birding at any time of the year.  These reserves are already well known for their wintering geese, but are equally attractive for breeding birds in the spring and summer.

Climbing in winter is good in Dumfries and Galloway (apparently - I am not a climber)
The Merrick at 843m is the "Knuckle" of the Awful Hand and the highest mountain in southern Scotland. BLACK GAIRY, its north-facing crag, has the most reliable winter climbing in the area, though it still requires a prolonged freeze. The easiest access is probably from in the vicinity of Kirriereoch on the minor road to the west of the crag.
